Applications of the methods and equations employed in physics
can be applied in the mental ability questions of Civil Service
Examination.
Section: 1 General Physics
Distinction between Mass and Weight
Mass of the body is the quantity of matter it contains .Basic unit
is kg.
The weight of the body is the force it exerts on anything which
freely supports it. The reason for the body so exerting such force
is due to the fact that, it is itself being attracted towards the
earth by force of gravity,.
Note : Mass of the body does not depend on where the body
happens to be.
But weight of the body varies from place to place (determining
factors ?)
(Try to read the details with utmost care since there is possibility
of number of questions in Civil Service Examination from this
section alone)
Eg: The mass of a body on earth is 100kg. (acceleration due to
gravity g= 10m/s2) The acceleration due to gravity on the moon is
g/6 (C.S.E 2001)
a) 100/6 kg (b) 60 kg (c) 100kg (d) 600kg
Variety or questions can be expected from the small piece of
information given above.
Eg. (Assertion, Reason type)
A Mass of the body does not depend on where the body happens to be
(R) = ?
(A) Weight of the body very from planet to planet
(R) =?
(A) Weight of the body on earth varies from place to place.
(R) =?
